ARCHWAY   This is out of date and archived.  We now have N3 Broadband connections in the NHS.  That system still had its problems This archive material and is out of date in 2008. NHS Net Problems: Most are over as far as the G.P. is concerned!   1999/2000: Pipex Ascend Router G.P.s are being connected to the NHS Net. This system employed was expensive for both G.P.s and Health Authorities. Now it is just expensive for Health Authorities. There are technical problems which can cause huge phone bills, but since January 2000 it has been agreed that call charges are picked up by Health Authorities. There is no cost to the G.P. NHS Net Out of date Uses ISDN rather the ADSL At last Free to General Practitioners NHSNet Connection Main points: * The system being installed is already out of date. * The system should use ADSL and not 64k ISDN * The concept of a private Intranet is out of date, even banks now use the Internet as secure security systems have been developed. Secure the data not the network. * The use of X400 email is quirky, although I now find it better, espically as now I can use LDAP servers which can be used to find anyone's NHS X400 email address. * There were problems with the dialback systems which with sloppy installation caused huge phone bills. The NHS and BT are now picking up these bills, not the G.P. *The NHS Net does not seem to conform to the new Government standards e-gif  full details of this are on www.citu.gov.uk/egif.htm. *The Government has announnced that NHS will use the e-gov standards, and X400 will be phased out. The NHS Net system does have an excellent firewall. However G.P.s need still to be careful as to what they download off the internet, as some software can act as commercial spy software.
